Visitor tips

  • Fuel up before early-morning tours. Many excursions begin early, and cafés near Kailua-Kona or Waikoloa may not be open. Bring a light snack or grab something the night before.
  • Dress for changing climates. You may start at sea level and end up in cooler upland forests or breezy coastal areas. Layering is key, especially for volcano and crater hikes.
  • Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes. Whether ziplining, hiking lava terrain, or exploring cloud forests, traction and foot protection are essential.
  • Keep your phone charged. Remote areas like Hualālai, Kohala’s backroads, and Mauna Kea often have limited cell signal. A fully charged phone is helpful for navigation before the tour starts.
  • Bring a reusable water bottle. Many tours stress sustainability and offer refill stations at the HQ or trailhead. Staying hydrated is crucial for hikes, ziplines, and warm-weather excursions.
  • Secure your belongings. Some meeting locations (like Kohala Zipline) require leaving non-essential items behind for safety. Travel light and bring only what’s necessary.
  • Check your confirmation email for any last-minute changes. Big Island tours sometimes adjust start times due to weather, road closures, or visibility conditions.
