A brief history of Kualoa Ranch

  • Ancient Hawaii: Kualoa was a sacred land, a place of refuge, where natives would come to seek forgiveness. It was also the location for the annual Makahiki, an event where warriors would train and participate in games of skill.
  • 1850: King Kamehameha III sells 622 acres of Kualoa land to Dr. Gerritt P. Judd, a minister under his rule at the time. His son, Charles Hastings Judd, later purchased the rest of the area now known as Kualoa Ranch.
  • 1863-1870: Charles Judd and partner Samuel G. Wilder run and operate the Kualoa Sugar Mill, but it is closed after years of poor rainfall.
  • Post 1870: Judd/Morgan family transitions to cattle ranching and continues operations to date.
  • 1943-1945: After Pearl Harbor, the US Army built bunkers and used the Kualoa Ranch as a base and airfield.
  • 1950s: Kualoa Ranch starts becoming a filming location for movies and TV shows.
  • 1974: Kaʻaʻawa and Hakipuʻu Valleys get added to the US National Register of Historic Places.
  • 1980s: Kualoa Ranch starts offering recreational activities and operates as a tourist attraction.
